March 8 – News

Friends of Faith Baptist of North Chili,

Don’t forget – Saturday is the day to set your clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time! We’ll see you bright and early for Family Bible Classes at 9:30 am (although your body will be telling you it’s only 8:30 am). But, cheer up – we’ll be done around noon-ish, but it will only feel like 11 am. Right? Woo-hoo!

Next week Janet and I will be attending a Pastor’s Retreat Network retreat at A Valley View Inn, in New Bedford, Ohio (Amish country, near Sugar Creek). It runs from Sunday night to Friday morning. We will be back home on Saturday afternoon (with our delightful granddaughter, Julianna, Lord willing). Because of that there won’t be an e-mail from me next Thursday. Sorry! If you want to know more about these retreats, check it out at: Click for PastorsRetreatNetwork.org

The following Sunday, March 18th, we will have Missionaries Travis and Becky Gravley with us. He will be ministering the Word in both morning and evening services. I will be teaching the adult Bible class at 9:30 am. They are appointees planning to work with Gypsies in Romania (through Baptist Mid-Missions). You can find out more about them from their blog at: Click for Travis’ blog

TIME FOR A SMILE

Do you detect any deficiency?

A noted psychiatrist was a guest at a gathering of humor editors, and his host naturally broached the subject in which the doctor was most at ease. “Would you mind telling me, Doctor,” he asked, “how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?”

“Nothing is easier,” he replied. “You ask him a simple question which everyone should answer with no trouble. If he hesitates, that puts you on the track.”

“What sort of question?”

“Well, you might ask him, ‘Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?'”

The editor thought a moment, then said with a nervous laugh, “You wouldn’t happen to have another example would you? I must confess I don’t know much about history.”

I’m really itching for Spring (we got another 2-3 inches of powdery snow this morning) – I think I’d play golf with anyone at this point!

“Bob, why don’t you play golf with John anymore?” asked a friend.

“Would you play golf with a guy who moved the ball with his foot when you weren’t watching?” Bob asked.

“Well, no,” admitted the friend.

“Neither will John,” replied Bob.

Sunday, March 11, 2007
* Family Bible Classes – 9:30am
* The Adult Class (meeting in the auditorium) continues the study “Crises and Crowns” — the Old Testament biographies of Samuel, Saul, David and Solomon. This week we continue Lesson 3 which covers 1Samuel 9-12 and is about Israel’s first king – Saul. How does that work out for Israel?

* Morning Worship – 10:45am
* From John 1:43-51, this Sunday morning’s message title is “Do You Believe?” In this portion of John’s Gospel, Jesus found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” Then Philip found Nathaniel who was a little skeptical, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” But Nathaniel is soon convinced that Jesus knows him in ways that some stranger he’s just met couldn’t. Jesus said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” That last part is an intriguing statement. Who isn’t looking for something greater than their humdrum, ordinary existence. This would be greater than sharing a $390 million jackpot, and taking home a check for $80 million! What could be greater than that? Jesus explains in verse 51 – “…hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” Can you figure out what He meant by that?

* Evening Celebration – 6:00pm
* Jim Todd, deacon, will minister from the Word. His message is titled, “Developing A Biblical Theology of Community For Both Life and Ministry” (from Philippians 2:1-4)

That’s all for this edition of FaithFriends. Pray with me that God’s people will be equipped and encouraged and the lost will hear the good news of the Gospel and trust Christ for their salvation!

Your faithful Minister of the Word,
Pastor Harriman
