January 25 – FaithFriends

Friends of Faith Baptist of North Chili,

An off-hand comment in a recent conversation got me thinking. What I heard was, “When I was first saved I came to church eager to talk to people about what the Lord had been doing that week in their lives and mine. I quickly learned that other people didn’t come to church to talk about that sort of thing.” I find that sad, but true. The conversations that take place as I walk among the church family rarely have much to do with spiritual things – it’s more often about sports, children, illness, the house, the car, etc. Can we change that? Church isn’t where we come to get filled up off with spiritual fuel, have our oil & tires checked, and an occasional adjustment to keep us humming along smoothly (a consumer mentality). It’s a place to “stir up one another to love and good works” as well as “exhort one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25). There seems to be an urgency about it – the Day is approaching! If we don’t do it now….

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION with Dr. Kenmiester:

Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it … don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain … Good!

Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU’RE NOT LISTENING !!! … Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO!!!! Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

Family Bible Classes – 9:30 am
The auditorium Bible Class is studying I Timothy in a series called, “How To Behave In the House of God.”

Morning Worship Service – 10:45 am
The message for this Sunday will be from John 9:1-12. I’ve been having trouble coming up with a title for this message. It’s the story of Jesus healing a man who was born blind. The disciples asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Their question and Jesus’ response reveals a lot about the difference between the way we view suffering and the way God does. Perhaps the testimony of the man himself will make the best title, “I Received Sight.”

Evening Celebration – 6:00 pm
Our evening celebration will return to our series on prayer – the message is, “Your Father Knows.” Our text, Matthew 6:8, tells us: “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” What is that supposed to do to us in terms of our attitude toward prayer?
